And here we now start our foray into the new and exciting world of internet weblogging! Through this blog we can share our story of physical healing through a balanced approach and an understanding of the body’s natural processes.
AS ALWAYS – this site is for informational purposes. Treatment decisions are ALWAYS individual choices and we are not giving advice but providing information.
Plan B – The Wake Up Call
This is what Rex did after his prostate cancer diagnosis at only 44. He had been embarrassingly healthy till then although admittedly could lose a few pounds. So how did this happen? One bite at a time. All too familiar here in the US.
Step 1. DETOX. Actually, in retrospect, we would have prepared better, but he went cold turkey and we scrambled. They recommended 7 days with the “pHion” program he used, and he did 4. It was not user friendly, having to take pills or drops or something every 30-60 minutes for 14 hours a day. There are different programs out there that are reputable & simpler. Support is great, advice from someone who’s been there, invaluable.
It’s actually best to prepare your body for this with probiotics, etc. which he did not do.
Step 2. nothing acidic. That meant no alcohol, no processed foods, no dairy. Books that give suggestions are helpful but depending on your lifestyle, it’s a change that is more mental than physical. We would have researched and prepared LOTS more.
Step 3. ate only alkalizing foods. Basically all things green (veges) but there are more on the list. Almonds are GREAT including almond butter, for an example.
Step 4. started on Nature’s Sunshine supplements on a program specifically geared for him. Everyone’s needs are individual.
Step 5. started drinking four 32 ounces of water a day. He started weighing 246# so that means “drink half your weight in ounces” = 123 ounces a day. He puts either fresh lemon juice or liquid chlorophyll in his filtered water and it is honestly GREAT.
Step 6. Started juicing veges for breakfast. Amazing way to get the enzymes. Fresh carrots and beets, including the beet greens, taste sweet actually. And fresh ginger ! we actually got a juicer and love it. You will start craving it, I swear. But breakfast was the biggest change.
Step 7. raw, fresh veges. If we “cook”, it’s absolutely nothing over 105 degrees. Lightly steam (and I usually do)
Step 8. no salt. The detox recommended Bragg’s Liquid Amino’s, a natural soy based liquid that is naturally salty and had 16 essential amino acids. We found it at a health food store, got a spray bottle (this stuff is CONCENTRATED) and we haven’t looked back. Love it, and so flavorful. On veges, rice, etc.
Step 9. every meal is at least 80% “green” and 20% not. Big change, but it’s amazing how quickly your body will crave the very things it needs to be functioning as it should.
Step 10. no red meat. No chicken at first (then maybe 3 oz a week), and only wild caught fresh fish, 2-3 oz portions, a day. Wild caught salmon at least once a week. NO shellfish
He started 3/24/07. He was 246# in January at the doctor. Had dropped to 236# just by measuring portions at meals, nothing more.
His fasting labs were:
Glucose 102 H normal range 65-99
SGPT 62 H normal range 5-40 (measures liver function)
Total Cholesterol 196 normal range 110-200
Triglycerides 169 H normal range 40-149
LDL (bad) 125 H normal range 50-99
PSA 3.9 H normal range for his age 1-1.5 indicative of prostate health
His pH at home was 5.0
By 05/16/07, he weighed 206# and his labs were:
Glucose 88 normal range 65-99
SGPT 22 normal range 5-40 (measures liver function)
Total Cholesterol 139 normal range 110-200
Triglycerides 39 normal range 40-149
LDL (bad) 93 normal range 50-99
PSA 2.0 normal range for his age 1-1.5 indicative of prostate health
His pH at home was 6.0.
Don’t listen to me, start googling and finding out about what you’re putting in your body.
If you can’t pronounce it, don’t eat it.
On 7/13/07, he weighs 196 and has been biking and playing racquetball. We will return for more lab work in august and will make decisions by the end of the year
